Identifying waste in healthcare spending

Health industry leaders often focus on what they can control - eliminating waste in their own organisations. Cost reduction in one part of the sector won’t necessarily eliminate waste; in fact it often increases costs elsewhere in the system.

Ferreting out waste breeds controversy and finger-pointing. For the purposes of this article, we view waste as costs that could have been avoided without a negative impact on quality. The survey noted that wasteful spending in the health system has been calculated at more than half of all health spending.
