Great expectations: The next generation of family business leaders

New Zealand’s family businesses are facing a range of challenges, not least of all how they will transfer leadership skills and knowledge from one generation to the next. Our Next Generation report takes a closer look at who makes up this next generation, how they perceive their roles within their family businesses and how they are going to transition into leadership roles.

The report collects responses from across New Zealand and from around the world, with 268 respondents in total. As well as those survey participants, the report contains a number of in-depth case studies, including one with Canterbury’s Simon Brand of Brand Logging.

Highlights from the report include:

  • 88 per cent of respondents are looking to do something special with their business

  • A total of 70 per cent of our next gen respondents were working in a different role prior to joining the family business

  • 52 per cent are concerned they will be spending more time managing family politics

  • Many respondents (88 per cent) feel they will have to work harder to prove themselves within the business
