New Zealand’s cities are continuing to be major growth engines for the economy, as well as being home to the majority of New Zealanders. However, New Zealand cities are also facing significant challenges around housing affordability, disaster preparedness and an ageing population.
All of these challenges are parts of a bigger question: How do we build liveable cities? While that feels like an abstract question, it’s one that every New Zealand city is facing.
It’s also a question that the 2016 Cities of Opportunity report aims to answer. By comparing 30 cities around the world, the report aims to understand what qualities are making some cities more liveable than others.
The New Zealand supplement takes these lessons and looks at them in a local setting, plotting how local councils, businesses and central Government can work together to create liveable cities. These lessons also go beyond Government, with important implications for real estate, infrastructure and education, as well as the full range of community groups with a stake in the future of our cities.
