Auckland Economic Monitor 2025

The Economic Development Office of Auckland Council, supported by PwC New Zealand, has developed the Auckland Economic Monitor publication and a dedicated microsite which includes trends in GDP, business performance, workforce, employment, business and consumer confidence, the visitor economy, and community and culture.

The Auckland Economic Monitor 2025 re-highlights the importance of Auckland to New Zealand’s economy. Auckland contributes 38% to the national economy, which is a unique position across developed economies; it is the centre for high value services; and New Zealand’s only truly global city.

The Auckland Economic Monitor 2025 is the second of three editions of the publication to be released over three years (2024, 2025, 2026).

Key findings include:

While Auckland’s economy grew through to March 2024, provisional estimates indicate a decline in GDP in the year to March 2025.

Auckland’s population reached nearly 1.8 million in 2024 and has grown considerably in 2023 and 2024, fuelled by immigration from Asia. It is currently the world’s largest Polynesian city and holds New Zealand’s largest Māori population.

The visitor economy has seen a strong rebound post-pandemic – international passenger arrivals at Auckland Airport were up 9% over the last 12 months, but are still slightly below pre-pandemic levels.
