Health and aged care

Supporting the aged care sector to effectively respond to our ageing population and improve outcomes for many kaumātua (elderly) and their whānau.

Our ageing population is changing the look and feel of Aotearoa New Zealand’s communities, aged care industry and economy. The aged care sector is facing challenges such as workforce shortages, regulatory changes and increased demand while trying to manage financial sustainability.

Kaumātua play important roles for our whānau and hapori (communities) - preserving traditions and knowledge, providing rangatiratanga (leadership) and nurturing our young people to flourish. As the hauora (health) of our kaumātua diminishes, roles are reversed as we see a gradual time-lapse of events. It’s important that we have aged care services that can support this process taking a holistic approach; taha tinana (physical well-being), taha hinengaro (mental and emotional well-being), taha whanau (social well-being), and taha wairua (spiritual well-being).

PwC New Zealand has a vast range of services and multi-discipline teams dedicated to the Hauora Health Sector. For our kiritaki (stakeholders), this means the best local knowledge, including indigenous models, combined with the broadest global experience.
Our tīma (team) intricately understand the needs, challenges and risks within the Healthcare sector and provide expertise across the entire health continuum, including;

How we can help

Health, safety and wellness process improvement

We work with providers to improve patient flow, manage rostering, improve performance, review systems and processes, integrate with primary health care, manage the audit process, and improve governance and financial turnaround.

Integrating kaupapa Māori models

We support providers with developing and implementing kaupapa Māori models of care. This includes how to form strong relationships with iwi and community partners while also providing opportunities for the Māori workforce to grow.

The business of national bodies

We help various national bodies involved in aged care services to navigate policy, practice and shared services challenges. We provide regulatory advice, finance management, governance models, design and testing for care models, capital asset management, guidance on resource management, system changes and national solutions.

Helping in the regions

We support health in the regions by providing technical advice on regional developments which includes forming strong community partnerships and ensuring the whānau and community voice directs services commissioned by Te Whatu Ora.

Primary Health Organisations (PHOs) - supporting the business side

We help PHOs to adapt to the changing demands placed on the Primary Health Sector, assisting businesses to increase efficiencies and reduce costs, review effectiveness, manage workforce challenges, establish governance structures, plan effectively, develop new healthcare models and find ways to access necessary funding.

General practices - taking care of business

Our consultants have clinical and operational experience within general practices. We know how busy these businesses can be so it’s essential to have efficient, effective systems supporting high-quality service delivery. We help with strategic planning, business case development, due diligence for acquisitions or sales, and overall operational and financial sustainability reviews.

Aged care facilities and disability providers improving efficiency

We work alongside aged care facilities as well as disability providers to help them find new ways to improve efficiency and productivity, including reviews of facilities, strategies to increase occupancy, matching hapori needs with the businesses vision and values, assessing internal controls, budgeting and business planning and management support.
