Equity

Rebalancing social outcomes for Aotearoa New Zealand

Every New Zealander should have the opportunity to live up to their full potential. PwC's Equity practice helps clients identify and then remove the barriers to equity,  facilitates discussions around complex problems and provides a roadmap of actions for clients to progress.

Equity is a complex social and economic issue that requires understanding, time, investment and a willingness to challenge the status quo. Enhancing equitable outcomes for New Zealanders needs an unwavering political and social commitment, and an integrated long term strategy.

The foundations of this include:

  • Understanding - a deeper and widespread understanding of how, where and why inequity manifests itself in our communities.
  • Acceptance and commitment - acceptance of the issues and an unwavering commitment to invest in a long term strategy to improve outcomes for all New Zealanders.

  • Collaboration - improving inequity doesn’t sit with a single agency or organisation.

  • Te Tiriti o Waitangi commitments - honouring and embedding Te Tiriti articles and principles into systems and frameworks.

  • Equity vs Equality - To bring about  impactful change in people's lives and for Aotearoa, we need to strive for equity. Equality centres on equal distribution and treating everyone the same, while equity acknowledges and accommodates the diverse starting points and unique needs of individuals. Learn more.

  • Health Equity - Indigenous wellbeing. As a connector and influencer across health, social systems and the private sector, we can assist organisations with measuring wellbeing and responsiveness to equity issues for Māori and Pacific peoples. Watch and read more.

How we can help

PwC’s Equity practice focuses on supporting clients to identify barriers and provide solutions to eliminate inequities. We use three frameworks to guide this work - Standing for Equity, Mana Tiriti, and The Pacific Way (Nesian Vaka) - with a focus on:

Our team

Our community of solvers is passionate about working with organisations, realigning systems to eliminate inequities and improve holistic wellbeing outcomes for tāmariki, whānau, Māori, Pacific and other priority groups.

Achieving these outcomes requires courageous and (at times) uncomfortable conversations, often on sensitive issues. Our team brings:

Strong cultural appreciation. We have a deep cultural connection to and respect of te ao Māori, pacific and other cultures within Aotearoa. We understand the foundations of tikanga Māori and the systemic drivers of inequity in Aotearoa.

Experience. Our experience spans policy, strategy, design, engagement, execution to implementation. Our growth strategy has been deliberate and is focused on driving meaningful change.

Authenticity. Coming from diverse backgrounds, we’re motivated by personal and professional desire to protect and improve social outcomes for those communities most impacted by inequity.

Connections. We see our role as convenor, facilitator, and doers to co-create solutions that look beyond traditional western frameworks. We are well connected across sectors and bring diverse perspectives and insights to our work.

We work alongside a number of PwC practices, including Manukura and Hauora to ensure a holistic approach to the equity mahi.
