Delivering sustained outcomes for Ōtautahi and Te Waipounamu

After a challenging decade, Te Waiponamu (South Island) is emerging as a thriving region with big aspirations. Projections show that the Canterbury population is expected to increase by 25% between 2018 and 2048, and annual economic growth in Ōtautahi (Christchurch) is at 3.7% - above the national figure of 2.6%*. This is creating opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship and collaboration. Achieving sustained outcomes in critical areas such as social cohesion, housing, hauora (health), infrastructure and water, requires deep expertise, coupled with local knowledge, to deliver tailored solutions. PwC New Zealand is building teams and developing skills in Ōtautahi to help clients solve their most important challenges and reimagine their place in the world.

Investing in areas critical to the future of Ōtautahi and Te Waipounamu

We have invested in developing and acquiring skills to bring new thinking to our clients’ challenges, providing them with a greater depth and diversity of expertise to help solve their most important problems. This includes the appointment of five new female partners in 2023, in legal and corporate advisory, risk services and tax, as well as investing in attracting specialist expertise, which has seen the office grow by 77% in the last two years.

This investment has bolstered PwC’s local capability in digital transformation, ESG, financial advisory services, hauora (health), human-centred design, property and infrastructure, and risk services. The growth in these areas is focused on meeting and anticipating what our clients need most, now and into the future, to respond to changing priorities and help them remain relevant as they navigate the reality of living in extraordinary times.

“Having exceptional talent on-the-ground in Ōtautahi allows us to bring expertise from across the global and national PwC network to our clients where they are located. That’s why we’re so passionate about the investment we’re making.”

Craig Armitage, Managing Partner, Te Waipounamu

Creating a space for innovation and partnerships

One way we are doing this is through our new Experience Centre -  a space designed to bring clients and the community together to collaborate on some of the region's biggest challenges. Through our strong working relationship with Ngāi Tahu and Ngāi Tūāhūriri, we have been gifted the story of Tawhaki which is told in the waharoa (entranceway) to the Experience Centre. Founded on the principles of respect and learning, the relationship between Ngāi Tahu, Ngāi Tūāhūriri and PwC seeks to create equitable and sustainable outcomes for everyone who is part of the Te Waipounamu community and whānau.

Our community of solvers are excited about the opportunities for Ōtautahi and Te Waipounamu. Get in touch with one of our leaders below to find out how we can help you solve your most important problems.
